Holiday Reading

In a mere 10 days, I will be on a plane to France. I know! Isn't that exciting? I'm going to Meribel on a skiing trip with a big group of friends.

Well, actually, it's more of a "skiing" trip for me, as I will not be skiing. I may do one day of it, but it's not really my thing.

"But Alice," I hear you say, "what ever will you do with your time then?"

Oh, there's a plan.

Imagine if you will: a chalet in Meribel. Outside, the snow, she is blowing. Inside, the fire, she is roaring. The hot chocolate, she is delicious and chocolatey. Alice, she is lounging on a couch reading a book.

After a day of delicious reading, Alice's friends return from the slopes, they have dinner and then go out and have lots of drinking and dancing fun.

Seriously, it's like the best holiday ever.

I'm currently putting together my reading list for the holiday. I figure it's seven days, so ten books feels about right to me.

Any suggestions? What do you think I need to read?

Well, that's so hard because it's easy to *think* you know what you might want to read on vacation, and then get there.

I think for a snowy ski trip where you'll be reading one or two classics (Jane Austen, always good for vacay), a good whack on the head mystery, one or two chicklit books and some of those bestsellers you've always been meaning to get to.

What's on your To Be Read pile right now? I might be able to make better suggestions based on that...

Ragdoll, it's funny that you mentioned that because I've lined up a few classics I haven't read (Middlemarch & Vanity Fair), a memoir, a chick-lit book, and a bestseller historical romance.

If I'm honest with myself, I'll read the non-classics first. But a mystery is an excellent idea - any suggestions?

Why yes! If you haven't read Sarah Waters "Fingersmith" that would be an awesome vacation book. I guess it's more historical fiction but there's a great twist that you don't see coming.

We love Giles Blunt (his last book, awesome) in Canada but I'm not sure if he's published in the UK.

Fred Vargas, a French writer, you should be able to find though -- she's lovely. Her book "The Three Evangelists" is perfect holiday reading...

Hope that helps!
